Wasim Akram was talking about Karman Ghulam while on-air and the piece of trivia left Michael Vaughan surprised.
Pakistan batter Kamran Ghulam’s battle with Australia captain Pat Cummins caught the attention in the first ODI held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Monday. Ghulam (5) was at the receiving end of a snorter from Cummins which he tried evading but the ball hit his glove before being pouched by the wicketkeeper
Ghulam made his name after hitting a century on Test debut against England last month. The 29-year-old though survived only six deliveries and managed to score just one boundary before becoming Cummins’ victim.
While Ghulam was batting, fast bowling legend Wasim Akram shared an interesting trivia from Ghulam’s personal life while on air.
Akram revealed that the Pakistan middle-order batter was born and brought up in a large family – he has 11 brothers and four sisters.
“Kamran Ghulam, comes from a big family, he is the 11th of 12 brothers and 4 sisters. Yup,” Akram said.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan, who was on commentary duties with Akram, was quite surprised.
“16 Kids. Wow! What’s the age gap, that’s of interest,” Vaughan chimed in.
Ghulam walked into the crease at No.5 following the dismissal of former captain Babar Azam on 37.
He teased Cummins in a friendly manner before the Australian pacer responded with a fiery bouncer. to which the Pakistan batter had no answer to.
After his dismissal, Ghulam was reminded by commentator Kerry O’Keeffe the difference between playing in Multan and Melbourne. “This is not Multan pitch baby, it is MCG,” O’Keefe said on air.
Mohammad Rizwan made 44 and Naseem Shah 40 as Pakistan were bowled out for 203 in 46.4 overs after being put in to bat.
Australia lost their openers early in the chase though. Steve Smith and Josh Inglis then took over and stitched an 85-run partnership.
Australia endured a middle-order collapse but Cummins chipped in with an unbeaten 32 to take the hosts across the line.
The second ODI between Australia and Pakistan will be played at the Adelaide Oval on November 8.
