With Ranji Trophy action returning, several Test regulars from the Indian team are set to make their long-awaited return to India’s premier domestic tournament, giving fans all the more reason to keep a close eye on what is happening in the first-class format.
This comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s recent mandate, which required all of those who are not on international duty nor out of action due to injury to play for their respective state teams.
The move has seen a lot of senior stars make their return to the domestic format after a prolonged period away from their respective state teams. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with the rest of the team, were under heavy criticism for their lack of participation in the first-class format. Kohli will also not be taking part in the upcoming game but has reportedly confirmed his availability for Delhi’s next game against Railways/
Let us now take a look at the Test regulars that will be a part of the upcoming round of matches in the Ranji Trophy:
Shubman Gill – Punjab
The 25-year-old specialist batter was promoted to the vice-captain in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad. But of late, he has struggled to score big runs for the national side, and it remains to be seen if some first-class cricket can be the solution to re-discover his best form. Punjab will face a tough test as they take on Karnataka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Ravindra Jadeja – Saurashtra
The veteran all-rounder has been a mainstay in India’s Test team. With his increasing age, questions have started to arise regarding his abilities in the long run. He has also looked far from his best, particularly on the field, amidst injury concerns. The southpaw will be keen on displaying his best form in all three aspects when Saurashtra take on Delhi at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.
Rishabh Pant – Delhi
India’s go-to wicketkeeper batter in the longest format Rishabh Pant has been the shining light in what has been a disappointing batting performance from the rest of the Indian middle-order unit. While several others will have pressure to score big runs, Pant will be keen on showcasing his aggressive self and possibly racking up a big score in the process when Delhi meets Saurashtra at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.
Yashasvi Jaiswal – Mumbai
The young opening batter has made his mark in Tests with the national side after an impressive performance against Australia during their tour for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He would be looking to reinforce his case at the top of the order with a big score when Mumbai take on Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy.
Rohit Sharma – Mumbai
The upcoming run of domestic games will be important for the Indian skipper to prove that his issues with the bat have been resolved. The Indian opening batter has been in poor form since the T20 World Cup 2024, where he had not delivered against New Zealand at home and Australia away. Frustrated by his lack of returns, the skipper even decided to bench himself for the 5th Test in Sydney. The opportunity against Jammu and Kashmir could be the spark that the skipper needs to find his best form.
