Batting superstar Virat Kohli will be a key player for India in the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, which is set to start on Wednesday, February 19. A total of eight teams will participate in the Champions Trophy this year, and the Indian men’s cricket team will play all its matches in Dubai. Kohli, who was horribly out of form in the five-match Test series against Australia last year, scored 52 runs in the last ODI match played against England at Narendra Modi Stadium on February 12. The Indian team management and fans will hope that Kohli maintains his good form in the Champions Trophy as well and helps India win the Champions Trophy title for the third time in history.
During the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Kohli, who has 13,963 runs to his name in 297 ODIs played so far, will have a chance to break multiple records.
Here’s a look a five records Virat Kohli can break in Champions Trophy 2025:
Fastest to 14,000 runs in ODIs: Kohli has scored 13,963 runs in 297 ODI matches for Team India. If he manages to score at least 37 runs in the Champions Trophy, he will become the fastest batter in the world to score 14,000 runs in ODIs. As of now, only two players—Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara—have scored more than 14,000 runs in ODIs. Tendulkar crossed the 14K-run mark in his 350th inning of the 359th ODI match, whereas Sangakkara achieved the same feat in his 378th inning of the 402nd match. Kohli, on the other hand, has played 285 innings so far.
3rd leading run scorer in international cricket: Since making his debut for India against Sri Lanka in August 2008, Kohli has played 545 matches across formats and scored 27,381 runs. If the right-handed batter manages to score at least 103 runs in the Champions Trophy 2025, he will overtake Ricky Ponting and become the third-leading run scorer in international cricket. During his 17-year-long international career, Ponting played 560 matches for Australia and scored 27,483 runs.
Most runs in Champions Trophy: Kohli made his Champions Trophy debut for India in 2009, and in 13 matches played so far, he has scored 529 runs. He is the leading run scorer in the Champions Trophy among active players. If the former India captain scores at least 263 runs in the upcoming edition of the Champions Trophy, he will break former West Indies captain Chris Gayle’s record of 791 runs and become the all-time leading run scorer in the tournament’s history.
Most 50s in Champions Trophy: Kohli has scored five half-centuries for India in 13 Champions Trophy matches played so far. If the 36-year-old right-handed batter manages to score at least two fifties in the Champions Trophy 2025, he will break Rahul Dravid’s record of most half-centuries (6 in 19 matches) in the Champions Trophy.
Player with most ICC trophies: If India wins the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, Kohli will become the joint-most successful player in ICC tournaments. Kohli, who has won one ODI World Cup (in 2011), one Champions Trophy (in 2013), one T20 World Cup (in 2024), and one U19 World Cup (in 2008) as an India player, will equal Ricky Ponting’s tally. As an Australian player, Ponting won three ODI World Cups (1999, 2003, 2007) and two Champions Trophy (2006, 2009) titles.
