Chakravarthy has been one of the key members of the Indian bowling attack, since he made his return to the side.
The former Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Dinesh Karthik has called for the Indian team to ensure that they select the mystery-spinner, Varun Chakravarthy for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Karthik feels that the Indian selectors could make ‘a grave error,’ by not picking up the spinner for the tournament, as he showcases his best form with the ball.
Chakravarthy has been one of the key members of the Indian bowling attack, since he made his return to the side in the recently concluded T20I series against Bangladesh. He had not played a single international game since the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE but was selected after his impressive wicket-taking form shown in the Indian Premier League 2024, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker in the season for the champions, Kolkata Knight Riders.
Since his return to T20I cricket, he has been in decent form with the ball having picked up 13 wickets in the five games he has played so far in 2024. In the recently concluded game against South Africa in the 2nd T20I, he picked up a five-wicket haul to help India come back in a low-scoring contest in Gqeberha.
In a post uploaded to his official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter), Karthik suggested that India by any means have to ensure that they mystery-spinner is selected in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
“If India don’t pick Varun Chakravarthy for the Champions Trophy, then they are making a grave error. Outstanding bowler he is turning out to be,” he shared.
Chakravarthy’s five-wicket haul however, went in vain as Tristan Stubbs turned up his game to stick around till the very end to help South Africa take the win by two wickets in what was a low-scoring thriller.
Despite this, Chakravarthy will hope that he has made a case for his name to be in the ODI setup as well. Barring T20Is, he is yet to have debuted in any other format and his form could push him to possibly make the jump to the 50-over format.
