Former cricketers, AB de Villiers and Robin Uthappa recalled times during their playing days in the Indian Premier League as deadline day approaches for franchises to finalise their retentions ahead of the 2025 mega-auction.

de Villiers has played for two franchises in the tournament while Uthappa has played for as many as five sides in the IPL. Reflecting on their experiences in the tournament, the two had a chat regarding their memories of previous auctions and what it felt like as a player.

Uthappa feels that the current process of the auctions are very ‘archaic’ in nature and feels that there can be a much better way to go about matters when it comes to the sale of players.

“I genuinely don’t like it. I don’t like the whole auction process at all. I am not a fan of it at all. I am someone who believes that it’s a, it’s an archaic way of dealing with, with human beings, you know, and, with all due respect, I don’t think it should be done that way. I think there is a more respectable and amicable way of drafting players into squads,” UIthappa expressed.

In fact, the former Indian international suggested a draft to be a much better process which does not tend to objectify a player and also put them under pressure with regard to their livelihoods as well.

“I think a draft is a very respectable way to be able to do that. Yes, it is entertaining, but the game, first of all, is hard enough as it is. You are adding a much more complex layer of treating a human being as a commodity and leaving his way of sustenance in the chance you know something that I hope changes over a period of time because genuinely it’s not as in our game so complex,” he added.

The former South African skipper also feels that the retention deadline day and the auctions can be a very confusing time for the players and he remains grateful for not having switched around too much.

“True, it’s a confusing time. I also never enjoyed it. Luckily for me, more often than not I was retained throughout my career just release that once. But it’s they do have a lot of fun with us in the media and it’s, it is really, it’s always been uncomfortable to me with the whole world knowing exactly what I earn and I blow it up so much, you know, and it puts a bit of pressure on the players as well with millions of people tweeting about you,” de Villiers shared.

Franchises will be looking to finalise their retentions as deadline day is upon us for the IPL 2025 mega-auction. All the sides will be keen to keep hold of their best talents and also ensure that they can recruit the best talents on offer to ensure that they stand a chance at winning the coveted IPL title.
