After a disappointing start to their Champions Trophy campaign with a loss to South Africa, Afghanistan will be eager to bounce back with a crucial win against England. The two teams will face off in their second group-stage match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday, February 26. Both sides are still searching for their first victory in the tournament and will be determined to secure a much-needed win.
In their opening game, Afghanistan struggled to contain South Africa’s batting firepower, as the Proteas posted a formidable total of 315/6. Wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton starred with a sensational century, putting his team in a commanding position. In response, Afghanistan’s Rahmat Shah played a valiant knock of 90 runs, but his efforts weren’t enough to guide his team to victory, as they were bowled out for 208. Now, with a fresh challenge ahead, Afghanistan will look to put up a stronger performance against England.
England, on the other hand, suffered a major blow ahead of their game against Afghanistan. England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been ruled out of the Group B fixture against the Asian side due to injury issues. He did not take part in England’s training session at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.
England failed to emerge victorious in their first game of the Champions Trophy 2025. Facing Australia, the English side batted first and reached a mammoth total of 351. Ben Duckett had hit a ton in that match. But the English bowling attack failed miserably. The Aussies displayed sensational batting and scored the winning runs with 15 balls to spare. Australia wicketkeeper Josh Inglis’ century guided his side to a convincing five-wicket triumph.
