Tensions were on the rise during the game between Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi and South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke in the third game of the ongoing ODI tri-series which was held at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday.
The two individuals were seen having a heated verbal exchange during the first innings. In the penultimate delivery of the 28th over, Shaheen was seen sharing his thoughts on Breetzke making his way to the middle in an attempt to take the quick single.
In another instance, the two were also seen bumping into each other when Breetzke attempted to take the single. The captains from their respective teams had also stepped in to de-escalate the situation as well.
Having won the toss and choosing to bat first, South Africa finished the innings with 352 on the board. Heinrich Klaasen, Breetzke and Temba Bavuma scored 87, 83 and 82 respectively to help the Proteas side get to the total. Afridi finished as the pick of the Pakistan bowlers with two wickets for 66 runs off his 10 overs.
Breetzke continued his rich vein of form with another 50+ score. He had made his ODI debut in the previous game against New Zealand. He set a new record for the highest ODI score on debut when he smashed 150 off 148 balls. But New Zealand ended up getting the win thanks to Kane Williamson’s quickfire knock of 133 off 113 balls along with Devon Conway’s 97 to lead them to a win by six wickets.
The ongoing game between Pakistan and South Africa is a do-or-die clash for both teams as the winner will make it to the final where they will fight for the tri-series title. Both teams suffered defeats in the respective games against New Zealand earlier.
The ongoing games will also serve as preparations for all three teams who are eyeing strong performances when the Champions Trophy 2025 begins. Pakistan open their campaign against New Zealand in the Group A clash while South Africa begins with a match against Afghanistan in their Group B fixture.
