Arshdeep Singh will be in action for India on Wednesday, January 22, against England during the first T20I of the five-match series. The T20I series opener is scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The 25-year-old left-arm pacer will lead India’s pace attack along with Mohammed Shami, who is making a comeback to India’s T20I side after more than two years. Shami’s last T20I appearance for India was against England during the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal played at Adelaide Oval on November 10.

During the first T20I against England, Arshdeep will have a chance to create history and become the fastest pacer in the world to take 100 T20I wickets. Arshdeep has 95 wickets to his name in 60 T20Is played so far. If he manages to take five wickets in the series opener, he will break Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf’s record. Rauf picked up his 100th T20I wicket in the 71st match.

The overall record of being the fastest bowler to take 100 wickets in T20Is is held by Rashid Khan. The premier Afghanistani spinner reached the 100-wicket milestone in his 53rd T20I match.

In addition to that, Arshdeep will have a chance to become India’s highest wicket-taker in the shortest format of the game and also the first Indian to take 100 T20I wickets.

At present, with 96 wickets to his name in 80 matches, Yuzvendra Chahal is India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is. Arshdeep needs two wickets to overtake Chahal in the elite list.

Arshdeep last played for India in the four-match T20I series against South Africa in November 2024. The Punjab-based cricketer, who was signed for Rs 18 crore by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 mega auction, picked up eight wickets in four matches and played a big role in helping the Suryakumar Yadav-led side win the series with a scoreline of 3-1.

During the home series against England, Arshdeep will also have a chance to justify his selection in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Arshdeep was picked ahead of Mohammed Siraj in India’s 15-member squad for the ICC tournament, which is set to be played from February 19 to March 9.
