Mitchell Marsh is an injury concern for Australia as they look to draw parity in their ongoing five-match Test series with India.
After suffering a heavy defeat to India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener, Australia have been hit by injury concern to star allrounder Mitchell Marsh in the lead up to the 2nd Test in Adelaide. Marsh has been carrying a couple of niggles since Australia’s white-ball tour to United Kingdom.
According to a report in Fox Cricket, in the eventuality of Marsh not getting fully fit for the pink-ball Test that starts from December 6, Australia are likely to give uncapped allrounder Beau Webster a debut. He will likely be added to their Test squad as an injury cover.
Webster, a 30-year-old allrounder, represents Tasmania is domestic cricket.
In a recent Sheffield Shield match – Australia’s premier domestic red-ball competition – he scored 61 and 49 besides taking five wickets against New South Wales with his right-arm pace.
“(Marsh) He has been battling a couple of little niggles since the UK tour,” Australian captain Pat Cummins had said after the end of the first Test in Perth.
“He was a little sore towards the end of this Test match (Perth), so the next 10 days he has a chance to freshen up and try to get it right. We’ll see how he goes,” he added.
Tasmanian captain Jordan Silk was all praise for Webster after his all-round show against New South Wales.
“(Webster’s) a special player at the moment,” Silk told reporters. “Anytime I feel like we’re in trouble, I feel like I can throw him the ball and he just seems to be able to create something, or anytime we’re in similar trouble with the bat then he’s able to dig us out of it.”
“He showed his class again this game with valuable runs, first and second innings, and then obviously to take the last two wickets,” he added.
Webster has played 95 first-class matches so far and scored 5297 runs at an average of 37.83. He has 12 centuries and 24 fifties to his name.
He has also picked up 148 wickets including two five-wicket hauls.
