Santner bowled a low full toss and Kohli, instead of playing it with a straight bat, moved his bat across and paid the price for making a wrong shot selection
Virat Kohli shellshocked after bizarre dismissal
Virat Kohli succumbed to a bizarre shot, ending up getting clean bowled by New Zealand left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium (MCA) stadium in Pune on Friday. The former India skipper was needed to stay put with Yashasvi Jaiswal after they lost Shubman Gill early in the morning session of the second day of the ongoing second Test.
It was the 24th over of the India innings when Santner bowled a low full toss and Kohli, instead of playing it with a straight bat, moved his bat across and paid the price for making a wrong shot selection. The ball sneaked under Kohli’s bat to disturb the middle and leg stump. The former India skipper left the field fuming, getting out for just 1.
The former India captain was left in utter disbelief following his dismissal. He stood frozen for a few moments, visibly shaken, before venting his frustration by swinging his bat in anger. As he walked back to the dugout, shaking his head in disappointment, the Pune crowd was stunned into silence, struggling to process what had just happened.
Commentators couldn’t hide their surprise either, with one exclaiming, “That was such an unusual dismissal, so unlike Kohli.” The replays of the wicket only reinforced the shock, capturing the uncharacteristic nature of his exit.
Soon after, former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri joined the commentary, and Gavaskar pointed out that Kohli may have misjudged the delivery.
“All he needed to do was flick it through the midwicket region. He usually does that perfectly with his bottom hand,” Gavaskar explained. However, he noted that Kohli’s bat made contact with the ground instead, which led to the unfortunate dismissal. “It was that bottom edge that let him down,” he added.
Gavaskar further commented on Kohli’s mindset at the time, noting his eagerness to dominate the bowlers.
“He was clearly keen to come out and make a statement, but things didn’t go as planned,” Gavaskar concluded.
