The former Indian cricketer and Head Coach, Ravi Shastri, remains pleased after seeing both Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan find themselves back in the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s annual retainers after being snubbed from the list earlier.
“I thought seeing Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan back in the mix, because what transpired there was between the team management, the BCCI and the individuals involved. I’m glad that there was communication, things have been sorted out and they get back their contracts,” Shastri said in the latest episode of The ICC Review Show.
“Shreyas Iyer in particular, the way he’s played for India over the last 18 months and he’s become like an absolute certainty in the white-ball format of the game, especially the one-day format, and the way he played in the Champions Trophy, demands recognition,” he added.
“They’ve literally banged the door down, but they were reprimanded. They were given the rap on the knuckles that at times is needed, but I’m glad all’s well and settled,” he reflected.
He was particularly pleased by how Shreyas Iyer has been performing since making his return in the ODI format. He played a key role, finishing as the top-scorer in the Champions Trophy campaign which India managed to win.
“Shreyas Iyer in particular, the way he’s played for India over the last 18 months and he’s become an absolute certainty in the white-ball format of the game, especially the one-day format. He can (earn a recall for Test cricket) but it’s again going to be a competition. White-ball, certain (selection). Test cricket, (we) have got to see who the other players are around,” he commented.
Iyer’s comeback surged through consistent performances in the domestic circuit and also leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024. He will now look to replicate similar performances with his new franchise, Punjab Kings, who are currently fourth on the points table with 10 points from 8 games so far.
He will be back in action for their next game, which is against his former franchise, KKR, at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata.
