Rishabh Pant was controversially given out on day four of the third and final Test of the three-match series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

The Indian star wicket-keeper-batter was declared to be caught ‘bat-pad’ by the third umpire.

Pant had smashed Ajaz Patel for two boundaries and even survived a DRS review before his luck ran out.

On the fourth ball of the over, Ajaz slowed it up a bit and bowled it full and on off. The ball turned back in sharply and with bounce as Pant tried to use feet and looked to defend. The ball passed close to his inside edge and popped up in the air with the Kiwi keeper Tom Blundell lunging forward to complete the catch.

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham decided to take the review with the 15-second timer counting down as Pant wore a wry smile. He had looked over his shoulder to see if the catch had been taken.

UltraEdge showed a spike when the bat hit Pant’s pad but there was also a spike with the ball being close to the bat. Pant walked over to have a chat with the umpires as he desperately tried to make his case that no bat was involved.

The third umpire though overturned the on-field umpire’s call as Pant walked one of the slowest walks back to the dressing room.

He had made 64 off 57 balls.

AB de Villiers took to social media to question the decision.

“Controversy! Little grey area once again. Did Pant get bat on that or not? Problem is when the ball passes the bat at exactly the same time a batter hits his pad snicko will pick up the noise. But how sure are we he hit it? I’ve always worried about this and here it happens at a huge moment in a big Test match. Where’s hotspot?!,” ABD posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Fact is there must’ve been doubt. Surely you stay with on-field call then? Unless the 3rd Ump clearly saw a deviation? I’m not so sure. And don’t get me wrong, I have no bias here, just pushing for consistent calls and good use of tech.” he added.

Chasing 147 runs to avoid a 3-0 whitewash in the series, India had stumbled to lunch at 92-6 with only Pant’s half-century proving a spanner in the works for New Zealand.

Pant put on 42 off 53 balls for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (6) to give India some hope of reaching the target after it had earlier slumped to 29-5.

Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel took 4-43 in 10 overs and in the process became the most successful visiting bowler at any Indian venue.

Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips took a wicket each, with India still needing 55 runs for victory.

Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja picked a second five-for in the test as New Zealand was bowled out for 174 runs in its second innings.
