Jasprit Bumrah-led India thrashed Australia by 295 runs in the first Border-Gavaskar Test in Perth, registering their biggest Test win Down Under. The stand-in captain returned a match haul of 8/72 as India bowled out the hosts, who were in pursuit of a mammoth 534, for 238 in 58.4 overs on the fourth afternoon of the 5-match series opener.
India’s previous biggest winning margin in terms of runs was 222 during a 1978 game in Sydney when Australia played an under-strength side due to a mass exodus for the Kerry Packer World Series. This win propelled them back to the top of the World Test Championship standings with 61.11 percentage points.

“A brilliant fightback from India in the opening fixture of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, defeating the Australians at Perth. A fantastic all-round display by the Indian team, as everyone stepped up and contributed towards the victory! A loud cheer for @Jaspritbumrah93 who rose to the occasion both as a bowler and a leader. A great display of skill and temperament by young @ybj_19 and our champion @imVkohli, as their centuries set-up this game with the bat for us. Congratulations on the win and hope we keep up the momentum, moving forward in the series,” Shah wrote on microblogging site X.

While Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will be among the heroes with their solid second-inning batting performances, it was Bumrah’s unbelievable skill set and self-belief during Australia’s first-inning rout that formed the cornerstone of India’s win.
India are now 1-0 up in the five-Test series with regular skipper Rohit Sharma ready to take over during the Day/Night game starting December 6 in Adelaide.
