Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) decided to retain three players—Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and Yash Dayal— ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auctions. The next edition of the auction will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25. While Kohli was retained for Rs 21 crore, the Bengaluru-based franchise shelled out Rs 11 crore for Patidar and Rs 5 crore for Indian pacer Dayal. One of the notable names that has not been retained by RCB is Glenn Maxwell. The Australia all-rounder recently revealed that he was on a phone call with RCB for half an hour after the franchise communicated the decision to him that he would not be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions.
“I got a phone call from Mo Bobat and Andy Flower. It was a zoom call, they sort of explained to me the decision not to be retained. It was actually a very beautiful exit meeting. We ended up talking about the game for almost half an hour – talking about the strategy, looking to go forward. I was really happy with that,” Glenn Maxwell said on Around The Wicket podcast.
“If every team did that, I think it would probably make the relationship smoother. I could not speak high enough of the way that they dealt with the whole situation. They are changing a few of their staff as well so they needed to get that sorted before they started talking to players,” Glenn Maxwell added.
RCB paid ₹14.25 crore to acquire the services of Glenn Maxwell in 2021. Before joining RCB, Maxwell had plied his trade in the IPL for teams like Mumbai Indians, the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
The IPL 2024 season did not turn out to be a memorable one for Glenn Maxwell as he scored 52 runs and bagged six wickets for RCB. Overall, Maxwell has 2771 runs and 37 wickets under his belt in 134 IPL appearances.
Glenn Maxwell will now be up for grabs at the IPL 2025 mega auctions with a base price of ₹2 crore. Meanwhile, RCB will get three Right To Match (RTM) cards available at the IPL mega auctions.
