Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya on Thursday lauded his star allrounder Will Jacks, who finally came good against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium, putting up a show with both bat and ball as the franchise bagged two crucial points to move to seventh on the points table.
Jacks was the standout performer for Mumbai, returning figures of 2/14 before scoring a quick-fire 36 off 26 deliveries to help the franchise clinch their second straight victory of IPL 2025.
Jacks’ last few scores this season were 11, 16, 5, 22, and 1*, and he picked just one wicket in Mumbai’s opening game against the Chennai Super Kings.
But on Thursday, Jacks got the big wicket of Travis Head and Ishan Kishan.
“That is the beauty of Jacks. He has three facets. He can be a gun fielder. He can bowl those crucial overs, and he has so much explosiveness in batting. That is the reason he is part of the team,” Pandya said while speaking at the post-match presentation.
“We back him. Am excited, and today it came off for him. When we needed 42 off 42, we felt it was the tricky part. Rather, take your time. Not to get too excited and lose wickets, and all of a sudden you are in shambles,” Pandya added.
Led by Jacks, who played a decisive role with a fine 36 (26 balls, 3x4s, 3x6s) after an important spell of 3-0-14-2, Mumbai executed an all-round show to record their second successive victory.
Opener Ryan Rickelton made a fluent 31 while Suryakumar Yadav hammered two sixes and as many boundaries to make 26 (off 15 balls) to provide strong support to Jacks.
Mumbai bowlers were spot-on in formulating their plans and near-perfect in their execution, with ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah delivering a 4-0-21-1, Trent Boult nailing his yorkers again to return 4-0-29-1 and Jacks producing a brilliant 3-0-14-2.
Earlier, Abhishek Sharma went down the wicket, swinging his bat on the first ball. The ball shaped away to take the edge, but Jacks failed to get hold of it.
