Tributes continue to pour in for Ravichandran Ashwin who announced his retirement from international cricket today. Ashwin, a world cup winner, retires as one of India’s finest cricketers who took 765 wickets across formats.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir, a former teammate of Ashwin, feels the offspinner’s stellar career will serve as an inspiration to the next generation.

“The privilege of seeing you grow from a young bowler to a legend of modern cricket is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world! I know that generations of bowlers to come will say that I became a bowler coz of Ashwin! U will be missed brother!” Gambhir wrote on X.

Ravi Shastri termed Ashwin as an ‘invaluable asset’ during his time as India head coach.

“Hey Ash, congratulations on a magnificent career, old boy. You were an invaluable asset during my tenure as coach and enriched the game immensely with your skill and craft. God bless,” Shastri posted on X.

Ashwin was part of India’s ongoing tour of Australia and played in the Adelaide Test which they lost by 10 wickets.

After the third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw, Ashwin attended the post-match press conference alongside captain Rohit Sharma during which he made the announcement.

“I do feel there is bit of punch left in me as a cricketer but I would like to showcase that in club level cricket. I have had a lot of fun. I must I have created a lot of memories alongside Rohit and several of my other teammates,” Ashwin said.

“I have lost some of them over the last few years (in the team). We are the last bunch of OG’s left in the dressing room. I would be marking this as my date of having played at this level,” he added.

The 38-year-old will fly home from Brisbane on Thursday.
