Sarfaraz Khan was struck on the elbow while batting in the nets during India’s practice session on Thursday at the WACA in Perth.

A video posted on Fox Cricket showed the Mumbai-born batter grimacing in pain as he held his right elbow walking out of the nets.

According to reports from Australia, the injury does not seem to be serious. He was seen troubled by net bowlers and according to the West Australian, Sarfaraz “looked every bit the batter who hasn’t played outside of the subcontinent. He was caught on the crease fending short balls and chopping balls outside his off stump onto the wickets”.

Sarfaraz is in line to play the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth with India captain Rohit Sharma not likely to play the first Test. Rohit is still in Mumbai for the birth of his second child, and there is no update on his departure schedule for Australia.

Rohit’s absence would also mean Yashasvi Jaiswal would need a new opening partner and Gambhir was happy with his backup options even though both Abhimanyu Easwaran and KL Rahul struggled in two unofficial tests against Australia A. Former India opener and current head coach Gautam Gambhir hinted that Rahul’s 53-test experience and his ability to bat practically anywhere in the order could tilt the decision in his favour ahead of the uncapped Easwaran.

This would mean that Sarfaraz would be free to keep his position in the middle order. He has been ‘hit and miss’ despite his sparkling 150 in the second Test against New Zealand at home.

Sarfaraz made his Test debut back in February and in his six matches since, has scored 371 runs at an average of 37.10.

More details awaited…
