Former Protea wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher, who was the Mumbai Indians head coach in IPL 2024, has said that Rohit Sharma showed some good old-fashioned sixes against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, and a big score from the former MI captain is coming very soon.
Rohit hasn’t been able to reach the 50-run mark in six games in IPL 2025, with the 26 he scored against Hyderabad being his highest score.
Rohit’s form has been a matter of debate across formats, and although the discussion had died down a bit after the Champions Trophy final, they are finding their way back yet again.
“Rohit Sharma took it upon himself to go after the bowlers. We saw some good old-fashioned Rohit Sharma sixes – big ones too. I liked his attitude,” Mark Boucher said while speaking on the host broadcaster.
“He put the bowlers under pressure, created scoring opportunities. He was just past the 30-mark — a big score is coming very soon. He’s looking in that zone again,” Boucher added.
Even though Rohit endured another failure after a promising start in which he made 26 off 16 deliveries with three sixes, he gave Mumbai the momentum with the bat, and the others capitalised on it.
Rohit has been reduced to an impact sub for the Hardik Pandya-led team with a string of low scores, 0, 8, 13, 17 and 18, that cut a sorry figure in the Indian Premier League, especially for a batter of his stature.
Mumbai fashioned a four-wicket win against Hyderabad and are placed in the seventh position in the ten-team points table with four losses and three victories.
On Thursday, Rohit started with intent, smacking three clean sixes and showing flashes of the vintage batter that the MI fans have been waiting to watch.
But a full toss outside off from Pat Cummins lured Rohit to go for a big hit, and he hit it straight to Travis Head.
The disappointment was visible on Rohit’s face as he yet again failed to get settled and convert his score into a big one.
MI play their next game against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, April 20, at home.
