In the quiet village of Ghordaur in Bihar, where poverty speaks louder than hope, it was nothing short of a miracle for a labourer who woke up one morning to find himself as a crorepati. Dinkar Ram, a 37-year-old daily wage labourer from Saharsa district, lived in a modest thatched hut with his wife, Kajal Kumari, and their three children. Until recently, Dinkar’s mornings often began with the question of whether he’d find work and his evenings with the worry of what he’d feed his family.

Born to Kailu Ram, an ice seller who roamed village to village, and Lakshmi Devi, Dinkar never had the privilege of an education beyond Class 8. The crushing weight of poverty forced him to abandon school and start working at a young age. He took up daily wage labour in the village, and when that proved inconsistent, he migrated to Delhi and Punjab in search of steadier income.

It was during this time that Dinkar saved enough to purchase a keypad phone, and eventually, an Rs 8,000 Vivo smartphone. Introduced to the fantasy sports platform Dream11 through advertisements and friends, Dinkar began cautiously participating, forming virtual cricket teams and placing small bets, typically Rs 49 at a time. Over three years, he won a few hundred rupees on good days, a few thousand on luckier ones, and lost his investments more often than not. But he never gave up.

Then came the match between Australia and England.

On a whim, Dinkar crafted another team. That night, as he lay in his hut, he received a message on his mobile phone. It told him he had won Rs 1.5 crore.

For a man who spent his life calculating how far a hundred-rupee note could stretch, the number was dizzying. His first thoughts were not of luxury, but of relief – of escaping debt, building a home, and giving his children the education he never had.

“I’ve lived in poverty for 37 years,” Dinkar told local reporters. “My father struggled, I’ve struggled. There was never anything left after feeding my family to think about the house or dreams. Now, it feels like God has finally heard our prayers,” he said.

His story has turned him into a local sensation. Across the villages of Saharsa district, from tea stalls to farm fields, everyone is talking about the labourer who became a crorepati overnight.

But Dinkar remains grounded. He plans to clear his debts, construct a proper home, and, if the money allows, start a small business to ensure stability for the future. More than anything, he’s determined to ensure that his children grow up in a life far removed from the one he knew.
