Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi’s elder brother Sunny has said that his brother had no godfather, nor did the middle-class family have any power or influence, and the standard that Digvesh has reached in Indian cricket is entirely due to his hard work, as the Delhi lad slowly rises to prominence in the IPL.

Brother to Sunny and Happy, Digvesh hails from Saboli in the northeastern part of the city.

Picked by Lucknow for Rs 30 lakh, Digvesh got the Player of the Match award for his figures of 1/21 in a high-scoring match against the Mumbai Indians in just his fourth game of his debut Indian Premier League season.

The Rathi family has been with Digvesh through his multiple struggles and made sacrifices as well. His elder brother Sunny was a good left-arm spinner, but since their father Dharmender couldn’t afford to make two kids play cricket, the elder one dropped out.

Sunny is currently a police constable at the Mandoli Prison Complex, situated in northeast Delhi near the Uttar Pradesh border.

“He’s (Digvesh) here because of his sheer hard work. Digvesh had no godfather, we had no money or influence. We were advised to move out of Delhi. Par bhag kyun jaye (but why would we run away),” Sunny asked while speaking to The Indian Express.

Digvesh’s father, Dharmender, an assistant at a building material shop, knew that his son would surely make it despite having only limited means.

“Even when he suffered setbacks, he was passionate about the game,” Dharmender said.

Digvesh’s mother, Manju, said that she is happy to leave everything to the Almighty, while admitting that she did not watch when he played his first match.

“I didn’t watch when he played his first game… When he calls, I only tell Digvesh not to get carried away by success. And I check if he has slept and eaten well,” Manju said.

Digvesh has picked nine wickets in seven matches till now at an impressive economy of 7.42 and will next be seen in action when LSG take on the Rajasthan Royals on Saturday, April 19 in Jaipur.
