Jasprit Bumrah was on absolute fire on the second day of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Brisbane. The ace speedster struck early to dismiss the Aussie openers – Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney – before Nitish Reddy got rid of Marnus Labuschagne on Sunday morning. Bumrah’s excellence with the ball garnered praise from the commentators, not just the Indians but also the Aussies who were calling the game. But the way former cricketer Harbhajan Singh delineated the India pacer’s bowling was next to none.
Commentating in Hindi for Star Sports, Harbhajan took a jibe at former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal for his hilarious interview, with Usman Khawaja, which had set the internet ablaze back in 2021 and still keeps on surfacing on social media.
Ajmal had said, “I ready the guys like within a month any youngster can bowl doosra within 15 degrees but ICC ban straight away said nobody can bowl, science said, why science f*** man, what da science, science is the man.”
Taking a cue from that conversation, Harbhajan on Sunday described Bumrah as science. Calling the game at the Gabba, the Indian spin legend said Bumrah begins where science fails.
“Bumrah is science, man,” Harbhajan said.
“I saw an interview of Saeed Ajmal with Khawaja where he was speaking about science. He said, ‘What is science man? Man in science.’ So, Bumrah is science. He is a great scientist. The point at which science fails, his work begins from there,” he added.
“Bumrah knows how to target a batter. He’s a true artist and his art is to pitch the ball at the right area. But Khawaja doesn’t know how to play this bowler. His skillset is completely different and his numbers speak volumes about his talent,” Harbhajan concluded.
The spin legend’s remark came after his co-commentator Jatin Sapru discussed Bumrah’s success against Australian opener Nathan McSweeney. Interestingly, by the time Harbhajan was done with his explanation, the Indian pacer got rid of McSweeney for the fourth time in the ongoing Test series.
On Sunday morning, Bumrah returned 2/26 in 14 overs before heading for lunch at the Gabba. He removed Usman Khawaja (21), caught by Rishabh Pant, while McSweeney (9) was caught by Virat Kohli in the second slip.
