Nothing seems to be going Rohit Sharma’s way in the Test series Down Under. The Indian skipper keeps on facing flak for his captaincy as well as for his lack of runs. Ever since he reunited with the Indian team in Australia, it hasn’t been able to register a win in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His captaincy traits haven’t returned rich dividends, making him look clueless on the field.

At the same time, he has failed to leave an impact with the bat. Rohit scored 6, 3 and 10 in his first three innings batting in the middle order. After a series of low scores, he returned to the top of the order hoping to rediscover his rhythm, but the move didn’t pay off. Opening the innings in Melbourne, he was out for 3 in the first over of the Indian innings after mistiming his trademark pull shot.

Former chief selector MSK Prasad, who was calling the game on the second day of the Boxing Day Test, couldn’t hold himself back after India failed to affect Australia’s momentum with the second new ball. He slammed Rohit for his captaincy and poor batting.

“Heading into this series, we had a three-match series against New Zealand. It was pathetic. Never happened in the history of Indian cricket that we lost back-to-back three games, and Rohit was totally sorted out. He had absolutely no runs in that series. And here, he didn’t play the first game. Bumrah led the side very well. So, he comes after the backdrop of continuous failures,” Prasad said on air.

The former chief selector further pointed out how Rohit’s lack of ideas is hurting the team and his form with the bat isn’t benefiting the team either.

“I personally feel that it has got a direct impact. If the captain comes into some sort of form, that has a direct impact on the side. And he comes after a series of failures and that has clearly shown in the way he led the side,” Prasad said.

“He has not been proactive on many occasions. If you see, in this Test match itself, he had 11 overs bowled by Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, especially when Sam [Konstas] was going hammer and tongs. That has been the case with his captaincy. He has been struggling with both the captain and his captaincy,” he added.

Rohit hasn’t had a great run after winning the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. India lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka after 28 years, followed by a crushing series defeat, rather a whitewash, against New Zealand in what was India’s first loss at home in 12 years.
