A timeline of the events surrounding the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Three years back, ICC released the schedule of its major white-ball competitions till 2031 which included the return of Champions Trophy in 2025. However, less than 100 days before the tournament is slated to get underway, the schedule hasn’t been announced with ICC still trying to find a common solution to ensure a smooth conduct of the tournament.
Here’s a timeline of events surrounding the Champions Trophy 2025 schedule stalemate: –
November 16, 2021: ICC confirms the return of Champions Trophy in 2025 as Pakistan set to host for the first time. It will be the first ICC tournament to be held in Pakistan since the 1996 ODI World Cup.
January 6, 2022: Pakistan government reportedly gives approval for the construction of a new stadium in Islamabad to be completed by 2025.
April 28, 2024: Pakistan Cricket Board proposes three existing venues – Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi – to play host to the matches during Champions Trophy 2025.
November 8, 2024: Various reports emerge claiming BCCI has informed ICC that the Indian team won’t travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
November 9, 2024: PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi says board “not prepared” to accept hybrid model.
November 10, 2024: PCB approaches Pakistan government on further course of action after receiving a mail from ICC informing it about BCCI’s decision of not sending Indian team across the border for the competition.
November 11, 2024: ICC cancels event to announce Champions Trophy event raising fears over the fate of the marquee event.
November 12, 2024: More reports claim that PCB has asked ICC to give a written confirmation from BCCI explaining why the board is not sending the Indian team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
November 15, 2024: PCB announces Champions Trophy tour schedule and includes PoK regions. BCCI raises strong objections with board secretary Jay Shah demanding strict action from the ICC.
November 16, 2024: PCB drops PoK regions after India’s protest.
November 27, 2024: Reports emerge of ICC organising board meeting to discuss various options with its member and take a final call on the schedule for the Champions Trophy.
November 28, 2024: PCB chairman seems to soften his stance on Hybrid Model while speaking to reporters. “Whatever we do, we will make sure the best outcome for Pakistan is achieved,” Naqvi tells reporters.
November 28, 2024: A fresh report emerges claiming PCB has told ICC that Hybrid Model is not acceptable to them
