Former Kiwi opener Colin Munro on Wednesday accused Iftikhar Ahmed of chucking during a Pakistan Super League game, as a heated argument began between the two with Mohammad Rizwan also exchanging a few words, before the umpires intervened.
The incident happened in the 10th over of Islamabad United’s chase of 169. Iftikhar, trying to bowl a yorker aimed at Munro’s toes, was met with an animated response from the latter.
Iftikhar walked straight up to the on-field umpire, asking for clarity and protesting against Munro’s gesturing. Watch the video here:
The umpires, Ahsan Raza and Chris Brown, stepped in, attempting to ease the situation before it went out of control.
At the time of the argument, Munro was batting on 40 off 23 deliveries, anchoring a strong chase that led Islamabad to a seven-wicket win against Multan.
He was dismissed soon after the spat, out for 45 off 28, caught by none other than Iftikhar in an anti-climactic moment.
Having won the toss, Multan opted to bat first and posted a respectable 168, riding on wicketkeeper Usman Khan’s 40-ball 61-run knock.
In the chase, Ubaid Shah dismissed Sahibzada Farhan in the third over, only for wicketkeeper Andries Gous and Munro to add 89 runs for the second wicket to take Islamabad closer to the target.
After Munro was dismissed in the 11th over by Michael Bracewell, Gous added 55 runs with Mohammad Nawaz before the latter was dismissed by Chris Jordan in the 17th over.
Gous eventually took Islamabad to the win with a six off Ubaid.
“We were 15-20 short, the ball was gripping a touch, and in the second innings, it was completely different. We felt 180-plus was a safe score. The way they executed the death was good because of the experience and we haven’t executed our plans well,” Rizwan said at the post-match presentation.
Multan play their next game against the Lahore Qalandars on Saturday, April 26, at the latter’s home. Islamabad’s next match is also against Lahore, on April 30.
Islamabad are currently at the top of the points table with five wins from as many matches.
