As the Indian team continues to disappoint with their performances in the Tests against Australia, the side in a transitional stage has reportedly seen several Indian players willing to take over captaincy duties.
In a report by the Indian Express, several players felt that it would be up to them to come up with a special performance to give the side the win when Rohit Sharma had not joined the squad, but that hasn’t been the case for the past three Tests when it comes to performances.
The report also talks about an unnamed senior player who is reportedly willing to put himself in the running for leadership duties on an interim basis. It is suggested that many are not convinced that the younger Indian players are ready to take over at the moment.
But tensions are on the rise with the Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir reportedly frustrated with the side for straying away from the plans that had been prepared beforehand. With the side’s batting unit, failing to put up collective performances for a while, Gambhir has taken the reins when it comes to how the side would play and those that do not follow his line could suffer dire consequences.
Some of his selections did not receive unanimous support. This includes the likes of bringing in Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar. The latter has once again shown his prowess with the bat but has not had many chances to shine with the ball.
Rohit has also been under pressure with his lack of runs. The skipper who opens the batting is expected to set the platform for a big score but has not been able to do so of late. He will be keen on ending the series on a positive.
Despite a strong start to the series, the Indian team have been far from their best in terms of performances resulting in them currently trailing 1-2 in the series ahead of the final game in Sydney. The final game is a must-win affair for Rohit Sharma and Co where they hope to keep hold of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy along with their chance of making it to a third consecutive World Test Championship Final.
The final Test is set to begin on January 3 and will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
