Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan believes ‘Thala’ MS Dhoni can lead the franchise’s comeback in IPL 2025 despite being positioned at the last spot after eight matches. He admitted that CSK had not played ‘good cricket’ so far but said it was ‘only a question of time’ before the team returns to winning ways.
Dhoni took over CSK‘s leadership three matches ago, but even under him, they have lost two and narrowly won the third against Lucknow Super Giants. The five-time champions need to win all of their remaining six matches to have the best chance of qualifying; they can mathematically qualify with 14 points, too, but that looks a distant possibility at this stage, given how five teams have already collected at least 10 points.
“All of you will be a little bit disappointed with the performance of CSK this year,” Viswanathan said at an event in Chennai, as quoted by IANS. “Of course, it’s bound to happen. We have had this earlier also. We know that we are not playing good cricket as of now. But we hope that in the coming matches, we should be able to do better. We have got someone of the calibre of Shivam Dube here. He has been doing so well over the years. And with someone like Thala being at the helm, it’s only a question of time before we come back,” he added.
Viswanathan also hoped CSK could take inspiration from their first title win in 2010.
“Of course, we remember the year 2010. We lost five games in a row and went on to win the cup. That was the first year we won the title. I am sure the boys are committed. The team is committed. I am sure we will come up with better performances in the upcoming matches,” he added.
CSK are coming off a heavy, nine-wicket defeat against rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium where neither their bowling nor batting could put up a sizeable show. Thier next matches will decide their fortunes. They face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday (April 25) followed by Punjab Kings on April 30.
