Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Daniel Vettori will leave the Australian squad, mid-way into the first Test to focus on the IPL Auction as SRH’s Head Coach.
Australia’s bowling coach and former New Zealand international, Daniel Vettori is reportedly set to leave the team midway into the first Test against India in Perth at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to his commitments as the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s coach.
According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, Vettori will focus on the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming Indian Premier League mega-auction where he will play a big role in helping the side recruit more talents to the squad in what would be an intense bidding war for the finest talents in India and across the globe.
Vettori holds a rare position within the cricket fraternity where he has a coaching position with an international team (Australia), an Indian Premier League franchise (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and the United Kingdom’s The Hundred (Birmingham Phoenix).
The New Zealander was appointed as Australia’s full-time bowling coach in 2022 for all three formats under Andrew McDonald and has made himself of value within the team that Cricket Australia (CA) permitted Vettori to take up multiple coaching roles in franchise cricket.
“We are very supportive of Dan’s role as Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dan will complete the final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with the team for the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy,” an Australia team spokesperson was quoted as saying.
CA has also advertised for a new full-time national fast-bowling coach who could replace Vettori in future instances where he has to focus on his franchise commitments. Michael Hussey and Jim Allenby worked with the current team in the lead-up to the first Test.
Vettori however was part of the preparations ahead of the series opener working with the bowling unit and using his left-arm orthodox deliveries to help the Australian batters prepare for Ravindra Jadeja.
It will be the first time the former New Zealand cricketer will leave the squad midway into a Test. Before last year’s auctions, he was able to complete his duties against Pakistan after which made the trip to focus on SRH.
Australia will be keen on getting back the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as it has been a decade since they last won a Test series against India and the upcoming five-match affair on home soil could be the perfect chance to reclaim the title.
