David Warner was involved in one of the most hilarious moments of BBL 2025.
A bizarre event involving Australian legend David Warner unfolded in the 2024-25 Big Bash League match between Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes on Friday, January 10.
Hobart captain Nathal Ellis won the toss and asked his opponents to bat first at the Ninja Stadium in Hobart. Warner opened the innings for Sydney along with Sam Konstas.
In the first delivery of the fourth over, Warner attempted a powerful shot off a full-length delivery by Riley Meredith. He smashed the ball straight to the mid-on but ended up breaking his bat.
A splinter of his willow directly hit him on the head. The veteran was visibly shocked by the unusual event but escaped unharmed.
A clip featuring the moment was dropped on the official X account of Big Bash League. “David Warner’s bat broke and he’s hit himself in the head with it,” read the caption of the post. Watch the video here:
In the same over, Meredith got rid of Sam Konstas with a short delivery. The Aussie youngster who hit the headlines during the recent Border Gavaskar Trophy tried to scoop the ball over the keeper’s head.
He, however, failed to connect. The ball brushed off his gloves before landing into the clasp of wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.
Sydney Thunder lost their second wicket right after the powerplay, with Chris Jordan trapping Matthew Glikes for a caught-behind. Warner, however, had held the wicket at the other end.
Olivier Davier returned to the pavilion early after adding 17 runs to the board, too. Sam Billings struck a quickfire 28 off 15 balls, hitting four boundaries as Warner remained unbeaten at 88 runs till the end, smashing seven boundaries on 66 balls.
Thunder ultimately wrapped up their innings with 164 runs, losing six wickets in 20 overs.
Warner, who announced his retirement from international cricket last year, has been in sublime form in this BBL season. He is the third-highest scorer in the tournament, aggregating 228 runs at an average of over 45.
Thunder also remain at the top of the league standings. They have registered four wins in seven games to collect nine points.
