Drama peaked on Wednesday night when the DC vs RR clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium went down to a Super Over. Chasing 189, Rajasthan Royals effortlessly cruised after Sanju Samson’s dynamic start and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s explosive assault. Fifties by Jaiswal and Nitish Rana nudged the visitors within sight of victory. With Dhruv Jurel striking cleanly, nine runs from the final over didn’t seem an uphill task, but Mitchell Starc held firm, conceding just eight in the 20th over. The thrilling tie sent both sides into the season’s first Super Over, also the first since 2021.
The thrilling Super-Over
Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag walked out to bat while Starc continued the attack, beginning the Super Over with a dot. Both RR batters hit a boundary each before back-to-back run-outs wrecked Royal’s ship. Rajasthan posted 11 for 2 in 5 balls, and in reply, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs handed DC a thrilling win as the latter sealed the game with a six.
Samson, Jaiswal Set Kotla Ablaze
The daunting target of 189 needed a blazing start from Rajasthan. Captain Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal responded aptly, cracking down on Delhi’s frontline attack. After reaching the 50-mark in the 5th over, the visitors dealt an injury scare as Samson, on 31 off 19, retired hurt with a side strain. Hardly did that affect the Royals’ crusade as they were way ahead of DC, mounting 63/0 in the Powerplay.
Sanju was in the dressing room, with his eyes glued on Jaiswal’s assault. The left-hander whacked as many as 4 startling maximums and 3 boundaries, racing to his second half-century this season off just 34 deliveries. Kuldeep Yadav finally got hold of him in the 14th over with a tossed-up delivery that straight into the hands of Mitchell Starc at long-on.
Starc Falls to Jaiswal Storm
Mere 4 months after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jaiswal was up against his Aussie nemesis – Mitchell Starc, and the Indian youngster wreaked havoc. Jaiswal smashed Starc for a boundary off the second ball, following it up with a cracking six over deep backward square and then another four down to deep mid-wicket.
Nitish Rana’s 2nd Fifty in IPL 2025
Back to his home ground, Rana’s classic gig at Kotla powered RR’s chase in the middle over. The 14th over saw him taking on DC skipper Axar Patel for a six, which actually was an opportunity missed by Tristan Stubbs at long-on fence. The next one went through third-man, taking an inside edge off a powerful slash. Kuldeep Yadav got a similar treatment in the next over before Rana got to his fifty with a boundary off Mohit Sharma on the final delivery of the 17 over.
Heartbreak for Karun Nair
Karun Nair’s IPL comeback took a bitter turn on Wednesday night. After a blazing fifty in his previous outing, the Delhi no. 3 was dismissed for a duck in one of the unluckiest fashions – run-out at the non-striker’s end. Playing his first match of the season, Nair came in at No. 3 but lasted just three balls. A mix-up with Abishek Porel proved costly. Porel initially called for a run after edging Sandeep Sharma to point, but changed his mind too late. Wanindu Hasaranga’s direct hit caught Nair inches short of the crease.
Porel, Rahul Step Up Under Pressure
Delhi were on the back foot when KL Rahul arrived at the crease. Rajasthan’s bowlers had tightened the screws in the Powerplay, but Rahul broke free with a towering six off Tushar Deshpande that soared into the second tier of the Gautam Gambhir stand. Porel followed suit, making up for his Nair’s hiccup. The duo added 63 off 57 balls before Rahul fell to a short ball from Jofra Archer for 38. Porel missed out on a fifty by just one run, dismissed by Hasaranga for 49 in the 14th over.
Axar Ignites the Charge, Middle-Order Flex Muscles
While Rahul and Porel steadied the innings, the scoring rate dipped. Axar Patel’s arrival changed that. With a blistering 34 off 14 – including two sixes and four fours – Axar injected momentum into the innings. He shared a 41-run stand off just 19 balls with Tristan Stubbs. Ashutosh Sharma then chipped in, adding an unbeaten 42-run partnership with Stubbs as Delhi, after scoring 77 runs in the last 5 overs, posted a competitive 188/5.
Sandeep Sharma’s Record-Breaking Over
After an impressive start, Sandeep Sharma’s night ended on a forgettable note. He bowled the longest over in IPL history – an 11-ball marathon featuring four wides and a no-ball – conceding 19 runs. He now joins Shardul Thakur (2025), Mohammed Siraj (2023), and Tushar Deshpande (2023) in the list of bowlers with the most deliveries in a single over.
