Delhi Capitals and Hampshire co-owners GMR Group secured the possession of The Hundred side Southern Brave on Wednesday. The purchase brings an end to the English Cricket Board’s (ECB) equity sell-off of the Southampton-based cricket franchise.
GMR’s bid valued the team at £98m, as they bought ECB’s 49% for around £48m, effectively giving them full control. With the sale, DC become the second Indian Premier League side to own one hundred per cent stakes of a franchise in the 100-ball tournament, after SRH Northern Superchargers.
Southern Brave comprise the historic counties of Hampshire and Sussex, and GMR had earlier bought out Hampshire from Rod Bransgrove last year.
Southern Brave have a proud tradition in the nascent tournament as they became the first team to clinch the title in the inaugural 2021 edition of the hundred with a 32-run win over Birmingham Phoenix in the final. They also made it to the final of the most recent edition of the event in 2024 but fell at the final hurdle to Oval Invincibles.
Southern Brave’s women’s team have also etched their name in the winners’ roll of honour as they claimed the women’s category of the event in 2023 with a 34-run triumph over Northern Superchargers.
Delhi Capitals are yet to win an IPL title despite having been a constant presence in the money-rich franchise league tournament ever since the very first edition all the way back in the year 2028. Fans and ownership of the team based in the Indian capital city hope to have a change in fortunes in the upcoming 2025 season of the tournament following a promising mega auction.
