South African promising star Dewald Brevis joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for IPL 2025 on Saturday (April 19), giving the franchise a chance to poke a bit of rivalry with Mumbai Indians (MI).
CSK and MI face each other on Sunday evening at the Wankhede Stadium. CSK announced Brevis’ arrival on X with his photo in the franchise’s training kit holding a small jersey placard. In their caption, they used some slick wordplay to refer to the Wankhede as the ‘WankheDEN’ and revoked how Brevis was returning to the iconic ground but not in the colors of his former side, MI, but in yellow.

CSK roped in Brevis after medium pacer Gurjapneet Singh was ruled out of the season because of an injury. Brevis went unsold at the IPL 2025 auction and will earn Rs 2.2 crore from the five-time champions.
Nicknamed ‘Baby AB’ for his similarities with South African legend AB de Villiers, Brevis played 10 matches for MI, seven in 2022 and the rest in 2024. In these, he managed 230 runs at a strike-rate of 133.72 with no half-centuries.
He is coming to the 2025 season in good form, having played for the Titans in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 tournament earlier this month and scored 573 runs from 12 innings at an average of 47.75.
CSK will hope Brevis’ entry could help their struggling season. They are placed last in the points table with two wins from seven matches, with their batting unable to find form or consistency.
Brevis might be able to provide the team with some chaos and excitement, making that middle-order much stronger for high-scoring flat wickets like the Wankhede. However, as Brevis’ numbers show, he’s quite raw in this format and would need patience from the management.
He is the second replacement player for CSK this season who have already signed Mumbai prodigy Ayush Mhatre to replace their regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. Although they have gone back to MS Dhoni to lead the franchise, the replacement players show CSK’s shifting strategy towards building with younger players.
