Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was fuming at his 19-year-old Australian counterpart Sam Konstas in the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and engaged in a verbal spat during India’s second innings at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Monday.

The stump mics picked up Jaiswal’s jibe, “Do your job” at Konstas who was continuously chirping when the Indian batter was taking his guard.

Jaiswal later made his frustration known to the umpire. ‘Why is he talking?’ Jaiswal asked. He was also seen having a chat with Rishabh Pant, his comparatively more experienced partner who tried to keep him in the zone. Pant said something to the 23-year-old to keep his nerves calm in that moment.

Broadcasters Star Sports have now shared a clip of the spat on X (formerly Twitter). “Yashasvi Jaiswal didn’t just let his bat do the talking! A cheeky ‘Do your job!’ to Sam Konstas was all it took to light up the game with some good old-fashioned on-field banter,” the post read.

Moments later, Jaiswal released his frustration by trying to smash a ball outside off stump. He ended up hitting Konstas hard at a silly point in the process.

It added to the physical contact the 19-year-old has had to deal with in his debut match in Melbourne. However, there seemed to be no hard feelings between the young batters.

Konstas has been in the thick of things on his Test debut. On the first morning, Australia’s batters seemed to be on a roll as he smashed a 65-ball 60 that included a six against India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

During the innings, Indian star Virat Kohli was seen bumping into the young cricketer. The brief altercation led to a lot of criticism being directed toward the Indians.

Konstas later spoke about the incident to Channel 7 and said, “I think the emotions got to both of us. I didn’t quite realize, I was doing my gloves, then a little shoulder charge, but it happens in cricket.”

Konstas had the last laugh as Australia won the Melbourne Test by 184 runs. India’s batting line-up was dismantled on the final day, courtesy of impactful bowling displays from Pat Cummins, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon.

India now have one last opportunity to level the series in Sydney. The final Test will commence on January 3.
