S Sreesanth is quite confident of the Indian team returning home with the Champions Trophy. The Rohit Sharma-led India have stormed into the final of the marquee tournament unbeaten. They defeated Australia in a semifinal clash on Tuesday in Dubai and are the only team of the ongoing competition to have won all their matches en route to the title clash.
India defeated Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand to top Group A and enter the knockouts.
“Doesn’t matter who the opponents are in the final — India are going to win,” former India fast bowler Sreesanth told PTI Video. “There is so much positive energy. They are playing some wonderful cricket. The way Virat Kohli anchoring the chase, the way Shreyas Iyer has stepped up — let’s just keep our fingers crossed.”
India will next face the winner of the second semifinal that will see South Africa taking on New Zealand in Lahore today.
Sreesanth says staying grounded will be the key to continuing India maintaining their winning run.
“Let’s be humble in our process. That’s what Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) used to say — one of the best captains I’ve played with. Even Sourav Ganguly used to say the same. Dada always used to say, let’s be humble and trust the process. That’s exactly what the Indian team is doing… Gautam (Gambhir) bhai is doing a great job,” he said.
Sreesanth played 27 Tests, 53 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India between 2006 and 2011. His professional career took a major hit after being accused of spot-fixing during IPL 2013. He was subsequently given a lifetime ban by the BCCI which was later overturned and allowed the right-arm pacer to resume his playing career for a brief period.
Sreesanth was the member of India’s two world cup winning teams including the 2007 ICC World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup.
The 42-year-old predicts India to dominate the world cricket for years citing their incredible talent pipeline.
“Absolutely, there’s no doubt that India will dominate world cricket for years to come. The talent pipeline is incredible — from domestic cricket to Under-19 tournaments to women’s cricket, the system is flourishing. We have to thank the BCCI and Jay Shah for building such a strong foundation. The support system, the sponsorships, the structure — India are well ahead of the rest of the world,” he said.
