The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma has called on the bowling unit to step up and take responsibility and not to rely solely on the spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah after the side suffered a loss by 10 wickets in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.
The Indian bowling attack was well off the mark, compared to their previous performance in Perth which allowed Travis Head to score 140 runs and take the game away from the visitors in the process.
“Jasprit Bumrah cannot alone take responsibility. You don’t expect him to bowl from both ends. The other guys also need to step in and share the responsibility. There will be days when Bumrah won’t get wickets,” Rohit said at the post-match press conference, as quoted by PTI.
Harshit Rana went wicketless after giving away 86 runs in his 16 overs while Mohammed Siraj was not a big threat until the game went away from the Indian team. But Rohit did not want to be too critical of Rana and his performance considering this was his first time going up against a top-class batter in Travis Head in the longest format. He backed the fast bowler to come back stronger in the rest of the series.
“It is not the right thing to judge Harshit Rana based on one Test match. I don’t feel he has done anything wrong and dropping him without a reason doesn’t look good. He got a good player (Travis Head) who put pressure on him. He has got heart and guts to play,” the skipper said.
India is on the back foot once again as the return of Rohit along with Shubman Gill proved to be futile against the lethal Australian bowling attack. Mitchell Starc took charge in the first innings with a six-wicket haul while the skipper, Pat Cummins took things forward with a fifer in the second innings.
Rohit and Co will now shift their focus on the Gabba Test where the Indian team will hope to bounce back with a more convincing performance to give them a series lead and also keep hold of a chance to qualify in the World Test Championship Final.
