Embarrassment For PCB As Second Pitch Invader Breaches Security During Champions Trophy In Pakistan (Picture credit: AP)
Pitch invasions in Pakistan continued on Wednesday as security guards had to drag out a man who jumped into the field after Afghanistan’s thrilling win against England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Ibrahim Zadran‘s brilliant 177 and allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai’s five-wicket haul trumped Joe Root’s majestic century, as the brave Afghanistan registered a thrilling eight-run victory over England.
After the game an incident followed where a pitch invader jumped onto the field alongside the celebrating Afghan players and ran in to hug them, only to be pulled out by the security.
This isn’t the first time that a pitch invader has appeared during the Champions Trophy, which raises questions about the security measures adopted by the Pakistan Cricket Board to stop such incidents.
During the Bangladesh vs New Zealand game, a supporter of a certain political party in Pakistan was seen running into the field and trying to grab Rachin Ravindra from behind.
The Pakistan Cricket Board administration took severe steps against the person, arresting and banning him from all cricketing venues in the country, but that hasn’t stopped the occurrence of such incidents, as seen with the Afghan supporter.
“The PCB has taken serious note of the security breach that occurred yesterday when a spectator entered the field of play. Ensuring the safety of players and officials remains our top priority,” a statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board read after the Ravindra incident.
“The individual involved was arrested and presented before a court of law today (Tuesday). In addition, he has been permanently banned from entering all cricket venues in Pakistan,” the statement added.
But no law enforcement has seemingly worked over the past 24 hours, as seen after the pitch invasion in the Afghanistan vs England game.
With security concerns always looming in Pakistan, any pitch invasions are being looked at more seriously than they would be across other venues in the world.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan now have two points and will have to defeat the Australians in their final group game to entertain the hopes of reaching the final four.
Earlier, Zadran’s brilliant knock helped Afghanistan pile a whopping 325/7, which looked to be a massive one after England lost two quick wickets within the powerplay.
