England have dropped Gus Atkinson for the second T20I against India at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai’s Chepauk. Pacer Brydon Carse will replace him in the 11. The visitors have also included wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith in the first 12, and a final call on him will probably be made on match day.

The team announced the calls in a brief social media post on Friday, around 30 hours before the start of the second match. England are trailing the series 1-0 after losing the first match by seven wickets. The visitors got bowled out for a measly 132 in the first innings, which India chased in less than 13 overs.

Atkinson had a bad outing. In two overs, he conceded 38 runs without any wickets and took home an economy rate of 19. His first over was taken down for 22 runs by Sanju Samson while Tilak Verma and Abhishek Sharma continued the momentum in the second. The pacer wasn’t asked to bowl again.

However, England bringing in Carse, who’s also a right-arm fast-bowler, for Atkinson suggests that they will stick with their four-pacer tactic in Chepauk.

The idea didn’t work well at the Eden Gardens for India didn’t find it difficult to negotiate any bowler apart from Jofra Archer. Perhaps, the visitors want to triple down on express pace, with Archer, Wood and now Carse. This would mean leg-spinner Adil Rashid will be the only frontline spin option in the team.

India, on the other hand, played three spinners and one specialist pacer in Arshdeep Singh at the Eden Gardens. Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel combined for five wickets while leggie Ravi Bishnoi’s frugal economy rate built pressure for Pandya to take wickets on the other end.

“(Jofra Archer) always looks good, he’s a superstar, he looked threatening,” skipper Jos Buttler said after the match. “Thought he could have had a few more wickets there. Mark Wood was bowling fast as well. To see two of them operate in tandem is exciting. We want to be aggressive, we want to be watchable. We are up against a team who are ultra-aggressive as well, so it’s really exciting. Venue to venue, you got to assess the conditions and play well.”

Chepauk has predominantly offered spin-friendly wickets but in IPL 2024, it had significant help available for fast-bowlers too.
