Chennai Super Kings faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 43rd league match of IPL 2025 on Friday, April 25, but failed to get the better of the Orange Army. SRH captain Pat Cummins won the toss and invited the Super Kings to bat first at MA Chidambaram Stadium, after which they could only manage to post a total of 154 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in 19.5 overs. For the MS Dhoni-led side, South African batter Dewald Brevis scored 42 runs from 25 balls, and 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre hammered 30 runs from 19 balls.

The five-wicket defeat against SRH in Chennai was CSK’s seventh loss in IPL 2025, and with four points, they remain at the bottom of the points table.

The match between CSK and SRH was a must-win for both the teams, and after losing the match, CSK’s chances of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs are all but over.

The Chennai-based franchise will only qualify for the playoffs if they win their remaining five league matches by a very big margin and not more than three teams finish with more than 14 points.

If that happens, then with 14 points and a better net run rate than the other teams, CSK can qualify for the playoffs.

However, the possibility of that is very low, as three teams – Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru – have already secured 12 points, and three teams – Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants – have 10 points each to their credit. If they win at least three more games, then CSK can’t match them and will get knocked out.

If CSK lose one more match, then five-time champions will officially get knocked out of the playoffs race.
