Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Super Kings by 9 wickets on Sunday (April 20) to win the 38th league match of IPL 2025 played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Hardik Pandya-led side rode on Rohit Sharma’s first half-century of the ongoing season to chase down the target of 177 runs in 15.4 overs for the loss of one wicket. Rohit remained unbeaten on 76 runs from 45 balls, and India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav hammered 68 runs from just 30 balls.

The win over arch-rivals on Sunday helped MI extend their winning run to three matches in a row, and with a total of four wins in eight matches played so far, the Hardik Pandya-led side now sits at the No. 6 position in the IPL 2025 points table, and on the other hand, CSK remains at the last place.

IPL 2025 points table after the conclusion of MI vs CSK

Position Team Matches Wins Losses NR Points NRR
1. Gujarat Titans 7 5 2 10 0.984
2. Delhi Capitals 7 5 2 10 0.589
3. Royal Challengers Bengaluru 8 5 3 10 0.472
4. Punjab Kings 8 5 3 10 0.177
5. Lucknow Super Giants 8 5 3 10 0.088
6. Mumbai Indians 8 4 4 8 0.483
7. Kolkata Knight Riders 7 3 4 6 0.547
8. Rajasthan Royals 8 2 6 4 -0.633
9. Sunrisers Hyderabad 7 2 5 4 -1.217
10. Chennai Super Kings 8 2 6 4 -1.392

The five-time champions have only managed to win two out of eight matches played so far. The sixth defeat of the ongoing season has now put the MS Dhoni-led side’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs in danger.

CSK can now only finish with a maximum of 16 points if they win all of their remaining six matches. But since five teams have already secured 10 points and have at least six more matches to play, 16 points might not prove to be enough for CSK to qualify for the playoffs. But six wins in the remaining six matches will surely keep them in contention, and if other results also go their way, then the Men in Yellow might finish in the top four and progress to the next round.

CSK’s upcoming matches

Chennai Super Kings will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their ninth league match of IPL 2025 on Friday (April 25) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and then take on Punjab Kings in the next match at the same venue on Wednesday (April 30).

CSK’s 11th league match is scheduled to take place at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru against RCB on Saturday (May 3), and then MS Dhoni’s men will travel to Kolkata to take on defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on May 7.

In their last two matches of the IPL 2025 league stage, CSK will face Rajasthan Royals at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 12 and Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 18.
