India, which currently sits at No. 3 position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table with 57.29 PCT%, is still alive in the race to qualify for the WTC final.
After losing the 2nd Test against Australia by 10 wickets inside three days, the Indian men’s cricket team has dropped to the No. 3 position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. The losing finalists of the 2021 and 2023 editions of the WTC have a 57.29 PCT%. Despite dropping to the No. 3 position after the Adelaide Test, India is still alive in the race to qualify for the WTC final, which is scheduled to take place at Lord’s from June 11 to 15 in 2025.
The top two teams of the WTC 2023-25 points table will play against each other in the WTC 2025 final. India can not only finish in the top two but also has a realistic chance of topping the points table.
India will finish the WTC 2023-25 cycle in the No. 1 position if the Rohit Sharma-led side manages to beat Australia in the remaining three Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The third, fourth, and fifth Tests of the ongoing five-match series between India and Australia are scheduled to take place in Brisbane (December 14-18), Melbourne (December 26-30), and Sydney (January 3-7), respectively.
If India wins the upcoming three Tests, it will finish the WTC 2023-25 points table with 64.04 PCT% and Australia then can’t finish with more than 55.26 PCT%. India’s only competition for the No. 1 position in that case will be South Africa, which currently tops the points table with 63.33 PCT%.
South Africa has to face Pakistan in a two-match Test series at home. If the home series, which starts on December 26 at SuperSport Park in Centurion, finishes with a scoreline of 1-1, then South Africa will end the WTC 2023-25 cycle with 61.11 PCT%, which will help India secure a top position.
South Africa will pip India only if they beat Pakistan 2-0. In such a scenario they will have 69.44 PCT%. If South Africa wins 1-0, then they can’t finish with more than 63.89 PCT%. If SA loses both the matches, then they will finish the WTC cycle with 52.78 PCT%, which will give Australia a chance to pip them and finish in the top two to set up the rematch of the 2023 WTC final against India in 2025 again.
