Virat Kohli a “master of one-day cricket” and the control on how to pace his innings is “crazy”, feels former Australia allrounder Shane Watson. Kohli, who was part of India’s Australia tour where they played five Tests, will soon switch to ODI mode as he’s expected to be part of a three-match ODI series against England at home next month which will be immediately followed by the Champions Trophy.
“Kohli is an absolute master of one-day cricket,” Watson said on Star Sports. “Yes, he’s a master of all formats, but especially ODIs. You see his extraordinary numbers over a long period, averaging around 57 and a strike-rate of 93 over a long period. It’s crazy to think the control that he has over his innings.”
Kohli kicked off the Australia tour with a fine century in Perth – the 30th of his Test career. Kohli’s latest hundred saw him surpass the record for most Test tons in Australia by an Indian batter.
Sachin Tendulkar held the record previously with six centuries on Australian soil. Kohli’s knock helped India secure a 295-run victory in the series opener.
Post that knock, Kohli underwent a major slump as he failed to make significant contributions in the next four Tests. He drew widespread criticism for losing his wicket in similar fashion throughout the tour.
Following an poor show in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli will be hoping to have a good run in white-ball cricket with his eyes set on winning a second Champions Trophy title.
Kohli, one of greatest ODI batters, has scored 13,906 runs in 295 matches. He boasts an average of 58.18 along with 50 centuries and 72 fifties.
Kohli last won the 2013 edition of the Champions Trophy in England under the leadership of MS Dhoni. The closest he came to lifting a second crown was in 2017 when India made the tournament’s final but ended up as the runners-up.
