A fan was left embarrassed following his failed attempt to take a catch during the SA20 Eliminator between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings in Centurion on Wednesday, February 5.

As announced by the title sponsor of the franchise tournament, those who complete a one-handed catch in the crowd will walk away with a share of one million rand. A man had the opportunity to win the ‘Catch a Million’ competition after SEC opener David Bedingham smacked a massive six in the third over of the first innings.

Facing a good-length delivery off Lutho Sipamla, the right-hander swang his bat to the leg-side and cleared the mid-wicket boundary. A fan who was seated on the grass bank chose to give it a try. He attempted a backward dive while extending his right arm but the ball was way out of his reach.

The fan ended up crashing onto the ground, leaving his fellow spectators and commentators in splits. A clip of the moment was dropped on X. Watch it here:

Tony De Zorzi who opened alongside Bedingham pulled off a blazing start but was unable to continue for long. He was dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana in the fourth over after scoring 14 off nine balls. Bedingham also failed to survive the powerplay. He registered 27 runs at a 190-plus strike rate before falling victim to Imran Tahir.

Captain Aiden Markram was the top-performing batter for the Eastern Cape. The South African star stepped up with an unbeaten 60-run knock, helping his team to cross 180 in the crucial fixture. Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen also made some vital contributions down the order, scoring 23 and 26 runs respectively.

Coming to chase 185, Joburg Super Kings made a promising start, with Devon Conway and Faf du Plessis stitching a 40-run partnership in the first four overs. After the duo returned to the pavilion, JSK faced a batting collapse.

Jonny Bairstow finished as their top score with 37 runs while Evan Jones added 22 to the score. Their efforts, however, went in vain as the Super Kings lost the play-off clash by 32 runs. Sunrisers will meet Paarl Royal in the second qualifier on February 6 in Centurion.
