Thousands of fans who came to watch Virat Kohli bat at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Friday (January 31) during seven-time Ranji Trophy champions Delhi’s Elite Group D match against Railways were seen leaving the iconic stadium in disappointment after the legendary India batter got out. Kohli, who came out at bat at No. 4 for Delhi in his first Ranji Trophy match after more than 12 years, could only manage to score six runs from 15 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered one boundary.

Kohli was clean bowled by 29-year-old Najafgarh-born right-arm medium pacer Himanshu Sangwan. Sangwan, after getting hit for a four by Kohli on the third ball of the 28th over, breached his defence on the next delivery and shattered his stumps.

After taking Kohli’s wicket, Sangwan celebrated in an aggressive manner, and the video of his charged-up celebration is going viral on the internet.

After taking Kohli’s wicket, Sangwan dismissed Delhi opener Sanat Sangwan on the first ball of the next over to leave the Ayush Badoni-led side struggling at 97 for 4 in 29.1 overs.

Fans had very high expectations from Virat in his first Ranji match since November 2012, but like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul, the former India all-format captain also failed to impress in his first Ranji match after many years.

Rohit and Yashasvi played Mumbai’s sixth Elite Group A match of the Ranji Trophy against Jammu and Kashmir last week but were only able to score 3 and 4 runs in the first innings. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant scored 1 and 17 runs for Delhi in the sixth Elite Group D match played against Saurashtra in Rajkot last week.

Shubman Gill was also not able to do much with the bat in the first innings of Punjab’s last Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match against Karnataka at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, but he redeemed himself by scoring 102 runs in the second innings of the match, which his side lost by an innings and 207-run margin inside three days.
