Liam Haskett was struck for a biggie on his BBL debut and the six was caught by his father.
Crowd catches always make for a fun view. When a fan ends up successfully taking a catch in the stands, no matter the level of difficulty, celebrations follow. However, during a Big Bash League match between Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat, this wasn’t the case.
Why?
Because the catcher happened to be the bowler’s father who was struck for a six.
Lloyd Haskett was a proud father as he watched his son Liam, a left-arm fast bowler, make his debut at the Adelaide Oval in front of 27,0000 fans.
Liam though didn’t have the best of the starts as he was smacked for 15 runs in his first over with Michael Neser depositing the ball twice into the stands. However, he ended the over by exacting revenge on Nesser by sending the Brisbane Heat batter for 18 off 8.
Liam then started his next over by conceding consecutive fours to Nathan Mcsweeney who then pulled the third delivery into the stands at deep square leg.
Incredibly, the ball was caught by Lloyd who acknowledged the roar that followed before throwing the ball back onto the field. Naturally, he wasn’t too pleased.
It was Australia legend Adam Gilchrist who revealed that the catcher was none other than Liam’s father.
“That man there is Liam Haskett’s dad,” Gilchrist said on Fox. “He sat back there and did not look thrilled at all with proceedings. He played it very cool. We thought he was just a cool customer, but he was so disappointed that his son on debut had just been dispatched.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan added, “No way. That must be the first time ever.”
