India’s Test stars Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill failed in their Ranji Trophy return, getting out cheaply. Ravindra Jadeja conceded nine runs in his first over.
India’s Test stars, Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill failed to make much of an impact during their return to Ranji Trophy cricket. The trio were expected to make a big impact on their return to domestic cricket but failed to do so as they were dismissed cheaply in their respective matches on Thursday.
Gill, who has been batting at number three for the Indian Test team, partnered with Prabhsimran Singh instead to open the innings for Punjab in their ongoing clash against Karnataka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. But his innings were shortlived as he edged one to the keeper to be out on just four runs off eight deliveries.
Both Rohit and Yashasvi opened the innings for Mumbai against Jammu and Kashmir. But the duo failed to go big with the J&K bowlers striking early within the first six overs.
Jaiswal was the first to fall as he dismissed via leg-before wicket to the pacer, Auqib Nabi. Despite coming into the domestic tournament, after an impressive tour to Australia, the young southpaw failed to make the most out of his opportunity.
India’s star all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja also had an anti-climatic start to his return to first-class cricket. Representing Saurashtra who are taking on Delhi at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, the left-arm spinner was hammered for nine runs in his first over by Delhi’s Yash Dhull
Coming to the Indian skipper, Rohit looked to take things slow and play watchfully, but he was undone by his lack of clarity with his shot-making. He got the top edge, which was carried to the fielder by the extra-cover region for a simple catch.
The Indian Test captain has been under heavy scrutiny since India’s home Test series whitewash to New Zealand and their disappointing show against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the fifth and final Test against Australia, Rohit, due to his lack of runs, opted to bench himself, which certainly surprised many.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s latest mandate wants all Indian international stars who are not on national duty nor injured, to take part in domestic cricket. The Indian selectors will hope the push to play domestic cricket can help the side overcome their woes in recent times in the ODI and Test formats.
