The stage is set for the Men in Blue to lay their hands on silverware yet again. But Rohit Sharma and Co. will be put to the test against a balanced New Zealand side as the two sides meet in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai on Sunday.
The upcoming final will be India’s 13th appearance in a final in ICC tournaments, including the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship. Out of this, Rohit Sharma has led the Indian team to four finals, equalling the record held by MS Dhoni.
But India will have to face their demons of the past if they are to outclass this Kiwi unit that has been in stellar form of late.
Let us take a look at India’s record in finals across all three formats:
India In ODI Finals
The 50-over format is where India has recorded the most appearances in tournament finals. In the eight appearances the Men in Blue have made, they have only come out as the winners on three occasions. One cannot forget these three moments as Kapil Dev led India to their first World Cup title in 1983, followed by MS Dhoni in 2011. India have also taken two titles in the Champions Trophy; their first being the 2002 final against Sri Lanka which was abandoned and the two teams shared the title. MS Dhoni led the team to their second Champions Trophy title by beating England to win by 5 runs as well.
- 1983 – India Beat West Indies By 43 Runs (ODI World Cup)
- 2000 – New Zealand Beat India By 4 Wickets (Champions Trophy)
- 2002 – India and Sri Lanka Share Title (Champions Trophy)
- 2003 – Australia Beat India By 125 Runs (ODI World Cup)
- 2011 – India Beat Sri Lanka By 6 Wickets (ODI World Cup)
- 2013 – India Beat England By 5 Runs (Champions Trophy)
- 2017 – Pakistan Beat India By 180 Runs (Champions Trophy)
- 2023 – Australia Beat India By 6 Wickets (ODI World Cup)
India In T20 Finals
The T20 revolution began thanks to the Men in Blue’s historic win in the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup. An iconic win over Pakistan helped bring relevance to the format, and they have gone on to win a second title in the most recent edition under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. The only instance where India lost out was during the 2014 edition where Sri Lanka managed to come out the victors in Mirpur.
- 2007 – India Beat Pakistan By 5 Runs (T20 World Cup)
- 2014 – Sri Lanka Beat India By 6 Wickets (T20 World Cup)
- 2024 – India Beat South Africa By 7 Runs (T20 World Cup)
India In Test Finals
The Test format is where India is pegged back the most. Having made the finals in the first two editions of the World Test Championship, the Indian team managed to lose out on both occasions and even failed to make it to the summit-clash for a third consecutive season after their defeat to the Aussies in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
- 2021 – New Zealand Beat India By 8 Wickets (World Test Championship)
- 2023 – Australia Beat India By 6 Wickets (World Test Championship)
