PBKS’ disappointing outing last time out wasn’t without its silver lining as Punjab had some remarkable performances from youngsters and unheralded players who put their hands up when the team was in trouble.
Punjab Kings finished the Indian Premier League 2024 in the ninth position, just one better than last-placed Mumbai Indians. PBKS managed to win just 5 of their 14 outings in the last edition of the cash-rich franchise league and will look to put up an improved showing in the upcoming season of the T20 tournament.
However, the disappointing outing last time out wasn’t without its silver lining as Punjab had some remarkable performances from youngsters and unheralded players who put their hands up when the team was in trouble.
Shashank Singh
Undoubtedly, the biggest revelation of the 2024 season of the IPL was the 33-year-old batter, who burst onto the scene to rubbish talks of a case of mistaken identity following the auction preceding the tournament.
Shashank managed to stand atop the run-scoring charts for the Punjab-based team with 354 runs, highlighted by an outstanding unbeaten 68-run knock against Kolkata Knight Riders that steered his side to an 8-wicket win over the eventual champions in the group stages.
Ashutosh Sharma
Another surprise package that came out of PBKS’ season was the rise of Ashutosh Sharma, who announced himself in the big time with quickfire innings that caught the fancies of the nation.
He debuted in another rare win for the Kings as the Preity Zinta-owned team managed to chase down a target of 200 runs against Gujarat Titans with Ashutosh’s blistering 31 runs off just 17 deliveries proving crucial.
He also nearly helped his side over the line against Mumbai Indians in the group stage encounter between the sides with an awe-inspiring 61-run knock, however, Punjab fell just short of the mark.
Prabhsimran Singh
One of two players retained by the Punjab Kings ahead of the 2025 IPL mega auction, Prabhsimran, has proven his value to the side with noteworthy performances over the last two years.
With a surplus of 300 runs in consequent seasons, Prabhsimran finished second only behind Shashank in the PBKS run tally and opened the innings for the Kings with a sense of promise and authority about him.
His best showing in the 2024 season was his 71-run-knock against eventual finalists Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the 24-year-old is also no stranger to the triple-digit club with a ton in the season before the latest edition.
Harpreet Brar
The 29-year-old brought a rare commodity to the PBKS bowling arsenal with his slow left-arm orthodox bowling and chipped in with the bat when necessary.
The southpaw managed to scalp 7 wickets in the 2024 season of the IPL at an economy of 7.97. He also demonstrated his ability to contribute runs to the scoreboard with the willow in his 12-ball-21-run innings against GT.
