The 31-year-old batter from Madhya Pradesh was among RCB’s retained players ahead of the auction and has the experience of leading Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The 31-year-old Patidar had guided Madhya Pradesh to the SMAT final where they lost to Mumbai by five wickets.
Who is Rajat Patidar?
After taking up cricket from age eight, Rajat Patidar made his first-class debut on October 30 in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy and made his Twenty20 debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2017-18 Zonal T20 League on January 8.
Patidar was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Royal Challengers Bengaluru) at the auction held ahead of IPL 2021, but he scored only 71 runs from four games during the season and was subsequently released.
After going unsold at the 2022 IPL auction, Patidar was signed by RCB mid-season to replace the injured Luvnith Sisodia.
In the IPL 2022 Eliminator, Patidar starred with the bat for RCB with a match-winning knock of 112 not out from 49 balls, making him the first uncapped player to score a century in the playoffs stage of the Indian Premier League as well as equaling Wriddhiman Saha’s record of fastest century in IPL playoffs.
RCB then retained Patidar ahead of the 2023 IPL though his performances have been patchy with the bat since.
After good showing in the domestic as well as in the IPL, Patidar was called up for the national side. In October 2023, Patidar was named in India’s ODI squad for the series against South Africa. Later that month, he was named in the ODI squad against New Zealand as an injury replacement for Shreyas Iyer, though he didn’t make it to the playing eleven on either occasion.
Patidar finally made his ODI debut against South Africa in December 2023 and scored 22 runs in 16 balls. In January 2024, he was named as a replacement for Virat Kohli in India’s squad for the first two matches of the Test series against England. He made his Test debut on February 2, 2024, in the second match of the series, scoring 32 and 9 runs in the first and second innings, respectively.
What Patidar Said About RCB Captaincy?
After being retained by RCB ahead of the 2025 IPL season, Patidar said that he is more than happy to take on captaincy if given the opportunity.
“Yes, definitely. RCB is a big franchise, and I love playing for RCB. So, it (retention) gave me a lot of confidence that they retained me,” Patidar had said.
“Of course, if I get an opportunity to lead RCB, that is what I am there for, and I will be happy. But it all depends on the franchise,” he added.
Patidar had said leading Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier in this season has taught him a lot.
“I have learnt a lot out of it. I have enjoyed learning the tactics. I love seeing players and anticipating what they can do,” he said.
