Kolkata Knight Riders recently announced Ajinkya Rahane as their captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. He is now amongst a selected bunch of players who have been picked to lead a franchise in the tournament.
The 2025 edition of the IPL will see some new and old faces, albeit in different colours. Amongst the franchises, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians and the Rajasthan Royals are the only teams that have kept the same skipper for the coming season.
With the mega auction, several big-name stars made the switch to another franchise, which certainly makes things interesting for the fans. Let us take a look at the captains that will be leading a franchise in the upcoming season of the IPL.

Gujarat Titans – Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill had a tough start to captaincy in the IPL. The side was not at its best in the 2024 season as it went on to finish eighth in the points table, making it the first season without qualifying for the playoff stages. But with the new acquisitions and a bolstered squad, Gill will likely look to make his mark as a captain in the upcoming season.

The Aussie skipper managed to make his mark in the IPL as a captain, redefining the franchise to build a feared reputation of being explosive with bat and ball. Nonetheless, their new additions have made them even more deadly as Cummins looks to take the side all the way to their second IPL title.

Rahane, time and again, has shown his ability to re-invent his game to cater to the demands of the shortest format. After returning to KKR for a second stint, he has now also been handed the leadership duties for the franchise. Despite leading KKR to their third title, the franchise opted to let go of the skipper and, since then, has made the big-money switch to the Punjab Kings. With his captaincy record, he holds decent numbers compared to his counterparts in other franchises, and LSG will hope that they can get the best version of Pant in the coming season.

After taking up captaincy duties for the Royals, the franchise has certainly improved their game as a unit. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s first season as a captain ended on a heartbreak after narrowly missing out on qualification to the playoffs. With the return of Ravichandran Ashwin, the side’s spin-unit will look take advantage of the conditions at Chepauk to ensure that they have a strong record at home.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Rajat Patidar
After building a history of having appointed superstars to lead the side, the Bengaluru-based franchise has looked the other way and opted to go with MP’s Rajat Patidar as their captain. Having built experience through the domestic circuits for the state, Patidar will now look to step up to the challenge of doing the impossible. But it remains to be seen if he will be overshadowed by the big stars or bring in his identity to the side.
Delhi Capitals – Not Announced
Delhi Capitals have not yet announced their captain for the season. Looking at the squad, it would come as no surprise if KL Rahul is picked to lead the franchise in the coming season, considering his seniority and experience.
