It’s time for another showpiece ICC event as the Champions Trophy 2025 is all set to get underway on February 19 in Karachi. Eight teams will feature in the competition which will go on till March 9 across three venues in Pakistan and one in Dubai. India’s matches will be played in Dubai, while the Group B fixtures will take place in Pakistan.
The Pakistan cricket team will start their title defence with a match against New Zealand in the tournament opener. As fans eagerly await the start of the tournament, we take a look back at the brief history of the competition.
Champions Trophy 1998-99: South Africa won the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy 1998-99 as the Proteas got the better of the West Indies in the final by four wickets to clinch the maiden title. The final game was held in Dhaka.
Champions Trophy 2000-01: The second Champions Trophy was held in Kenya in 2000-01. New Zealand had emerged victorious defeating India in the final by four wickets.
Champions Trophy 2002-03: India reached the final once again in 2002-03. This time, Team India faced neighbouring country Sri Lanka in the final. The two Asian giants ended up sharing the trophy after the final did not produce a result.
Champions Trophy 2004: Playing against England in the final at The Oval, the West Indies won by two wickets.
Champions Trophy 2006-07: The 2006-07 edition of the Champions Trophy was hosted by India. West Indies once again succeeded in qualifying for the final but they could not defend the title. It was Australia who won the trophy as they triumphed by eight wickets.
Champions Trophy 2009-10: Australia successfully defended their title beating New Zealand by six wickets in the final in Centurion.
Champions Trophy 2013: India, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, showcased sheer consistency to win the Champions Trophy in 2013. In the final, India beat England by five runs in a cliffhanger.
Champions Trophy 2017: In the final, the Virat Kohli-led side was up against arch-rivals Pakistan. Pakistan defeated India by a margin of 180 runs.
