Rajasthan Royals’ Bihar-born prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest player to debut in the Indian Premier League on Saturday (April 19). At 14 years and 23 days, he’ll take the field against Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2025 clash against Lucknow Super Giants at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Suryavanshi has come in as a replacement for RR skipper Sanju Samson who has been ruled out of the match due to an injury he suffered in the team’s previous match against Delhi Capitals. Samson seemed to have strained something in his abdominal area and had to retire out himself in the middle of the innings.

Riyan Parag is captaining the team for the match. Although Suryavanshi is only in the Impact Subs list for the match, the stand-in captain mentioned that the teenager is coming into the team, which suggests he’ll likely come to bat in RR’s second innings.

“We were looking to bowl, it is a little bit warm under lights, should be better than the last time,” Parag said at the toss, which he lost. “Vaibhav, the youngster, comes in. It’s been kinda tricky, we’ve been doing small bits right but we haven’t been able to put a collective performance together, we’ve been having honest chats as a team. We love playing here, we know the conditions well, hope we can put that to good use.”

Suryavanshi breaks the record of Prayas Ray Barman who made his debut for Royal Challengers Bengaluru at 16 years, 157 days against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019. Parag himself is on the list for his debut for RR at 17 years, 152 days against Chennai Super Kings in 2019. Gujarat Titans all-rounder Washington Sundar is also on the list.

Suryavanshi has played five First Class matches, six List-A matches and 1 T20, scoring 245 runs overall.
